Un début mémorable en Alberta
Waterton National Park

Le matin du 6 août, on prenait la route pour une destination bien attendue : un ranch à Pincher Creek, près de Waterton National Park, dans le sud de l’Alberta. Dès notre arrivée au ranch, notre hôte Pat nous montre où on peut se stationner : un beau spot avec vue sur les montagnes et un étang juste à côté! Au plus grand plaisir d’Anaya, Pat nous montre ensuite leurs chevaux et nous raconte un peu leur histoire. On passera 4 belles journées ici avec nos hôtes Pat et Ken.
Pat a pris le temps de montrer à Anaya une nouvelle approche pour mettre le licol au cheval. Anaya a même eu l’occasion de nourrir un poulain et sa maman qui n’acceptaient pas facilement de manger dans la main. Anaya les a bien gâtés! Elle s’est aussi installée avec une chaise près des enclos extérieurs pour les observer et les dessiner. Les hôtes ont même laissé Anaya brosser, démêler et tresser les crins d’un très joli poney Haflinger. Anaya était ravie! Theo, lui, a surtout aimé quand notre hôte Ken le laissait conduire leurs 4 roues!
On a pris une journée pour aller au Waterton National Park, à peine à 30 minutes du ranch. On a fait une belle randonnée (Bear’s Hump) nous donnant un très beau point de vue rendus en haut, mais ouf que c’était venteux (vous le verrez sur les photos!). Au sommet, on a rencontré un couple qui venait de la Caroline du Nord et, fait cocasse, on leur disait qu’on était allé en Caroline du Nord l’an dernier et qu’on était stationné à ce moment-là dans un quartier résidentiel près d’une très bonne pâtisserie (Sunflower Bakery) et, funny enough, ils habitent ce quartier!! C’était vraiment spécial! Après notre randonnée, on est allés au Prince of Wales Hotel pour voir l’architecture de la place et, avouons-le, pour “yeuter” un peu! On en a profité pour se promener autour de l’hôtel qui est entouré d’eau et faire plein de photos avec, littéralement, les cheveux dans le vent! En après-midi, on a fait une belle randonnée pour voir les Blakiston Falls et le Red Rock Canyon. Une belle variété de paysages en une seule journée!
Étant une semaine plus fraîche en terme de température, Anaya et moi en avons profité pour cuisiner des muffins. Le four réchauffe rapidement l’habitacle de l’autobus donc faut bien coordonner son utilisation avec la température (ça fait partie des ajustements à la vie sur la route!). C’était aussi le temps pour la buanderie. Cette fois, mon mari et moi sommes allés seuls pendant que les enfants sont restés sur le site (on prend toutes les occasions qu’on peut pour se faire une petite date, même si c’est pour la buanderie 😂).
Le terrain de nos hôtes ne se limitent pas au ranch. Derrière leur maison, il y a un très joli sentier pour marcher dans les vallons. C’était absolument magnifique au coucher de soleil!

A Memorable Arrival in Alberta
On the morning of August 6th, we hit the road toward a long-awaited destination: a ranch in Pincher Creek, near Waterton National Park in southern Alberta. As soon as we arrived, our host Pat showed us where we could park—an amazing spot with mountain views and a pond right next to us! Much to Anaya’s delight, Pat then introduced us to their horses and shared a bit of their story. We would spend four wonderful days here with our hosts, Pat and Ken.
Pat took the time to show Anaya a new way of putting on a horse halter. She even had the chance to feed a foal and its mother—who weren’t exactly keen on eating from someone’s hand at first. But Anaya won them over! She also set herself up with a chair near the outdoor pens to watch and sketch the horses. To top it off, our hosts let Anaya brush, detangle, and braid the mane of a beautiful Haflinger pony. She was thrilled! As for Theo, his highlight was when Ken let him drive their four-wheeler!
One day we headed out to Waterton National Park, just a 30-minute drive from the ranch. We hiked the Bear’s Hump trail, which rewarded us with a stunning viewpoint at the top—though wow, was it windy (you’ll see in the photos!). At the summit, we met a couple from North Carolina. Funny enough, we told them we’d been there last year and had stayed in a residential neighborhood near a great bakery (Sunflower Bakery). Turns out—they actually live in that same neighborhood! What a coincidence! After our hike, we visited the Prince of Wales Hotel to admire its architecture and, let’s be honest, to do a little sightseeing. We strolled around the hotel—surrounded by water—snapping tons of photos with our hair literally blowing everywhere! Later that afternoon, we explored Blakiston Falls and Red Rock Canyon. Such a variety of landscapes packed into a single day!
Since the weather that week was on the cooler side, Anaya and I took the chance to bake some muffins. The oven heats up the bus quickly, so we have to coordinate its use with the outside temperature (just one of those little adjustments to life on the road!). It was also laundry day. This time my husband and I went on our own while the kids stayed at the ranch. We grab any chance we can for a mini date—even if it’s just to the laundromat 😂
Our hosts’ land stretched beyond the ranch itself. Behind their house, there was a lovely trail winding through the rolling hills. We walked it at sunset, and it was absolutely breathtaking.
